One Size Does Not Fit All

There are so many diets out there and it can be overwhelming. One thing I have learned over the years is that not every diet will work for every person. It’s a matter of finding the one that your body can adapt to and survive on. Now let me remind you I am not a doctor or health professional; these are my observations from my own experience, have heard from friends, and probably read in the numerous health/fitness magazines that I subscribe to. A diet has to be a personal choice.

One thing I hear a lot of is “everything in moderation” which I completely agree with. But then you have someone like me who literally loses control around sweet, breads, granola bars, chips, cookies, etc. You get the point. Until I get my food addiction under control the “everything in moderation” simply doesn’t apply to me. I’ve also seen comments on how you wouldn’t give a recovering alcoholic a beer so why tempt a food addict with “bad” food? The difference is that we can’t live without food but we can live without beer. Make sense? I’m certainly not saying I will never have a piece of bread again (or cookie, granola bar) because that’s just ludicrous.

For the longest time I kept buying into the Weight Watchers commercials and signing up for the program, even went to a few meetings and then decided to follow the program online. I admit that I never gave 100% and therefore the results did not show up. What a concept! Although I love the program and how you can eat anything you want as long as you count your points for it, I just don’t think it’s for me. I have hopped from counting calories to points to carbs and back again without seeing results. I think if I had an “oops” day I started the next day on a different program.

Until I can get my eating under control I have cancelled my Weight Watchers membership and have decided to join a free community, MyFitnessPal. If you haven’t checked it out you should. I’m not promoting any program over the other or encouraging others to choose Weight Watchers, etc. I’m just trying to share my experiences. I have to say the one thing I really love about MFP is the community support. I have met some great people on there that offer such encouragement and motivation. Not to mention the app for your cell phone is amazing.

So with all that being said, I am currently detoxing my body of carbs for two weeks. When I saw that I’m a measly 42lbs away from gaining back all of my weight I knew I had to recommit and do this right or else I’d be right back to where I started. I pulled out my South Beach Diet book and am on day #3 of Phase 1. This means no fruit (which sucks because I love a banana with my breakfast), pasta, bread, chips, cookies, granola bars, potatoes, etc. for two weeks. The last time I tried this I only lasted a week but the cravings for the “bad” carbs went away and that was great. This time I am determined to make it the full two weeks and then follow the plan to reintroduce some “good” carbs back into my diet.

So whether you are doing a low carb diet, high carb diet, vegan diet, or whatever it may not be for everyone. All diets are not created equal so I suggest doing some research before starting one to see if it’s something you can follow through with. And whatever path you’re on in your journey, I wish you the best.
